Exploring local history with the children of Dublin
My name is Dervilia Roche and I have been working as Dublin’s Historian-in-Residence for Children since September 2020. This involves exploring local and wider history with children in Dublin aged 9-12, through activities and projects inside and outside of schools.
As a response to lockdown restrictions, I recently invited children to explore history in their local area and share it with me through video footage.
I was so impressed by the videos we received and the amount of preparation the children had put into them. They are shot very creatively and the questions are brilliant, showing the interest and curiosity so many children have in exploring their surroundings.
Often the children consider details that some of us might otherwise miss, such as small architectural features and unusual place-names.
You can check out the different clips below. I will certainly be drawing some ideas from these for future history workshops and I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the families who participated!
