Update from Polly, eco-gardener in residence at Richmond Barracks

Sometimes within the sights, smells and textures of the garden, I wonder what the month of April means for others.

For example, does it make you think of festivities such as Easter or Hanami, or experiencing a huge range of weather conditions all in one month?

Perhaps the name evokes fresh April showers, bobbing baby bunnies or the surge in the growth of greenery that gives the season its name.

For me, it’s about new beginnings and a reminder that once more, as in so many cycles before, life in all its brazen glory breaks shamelessly through winter's slumber.

On Friday 11 April we had a flying visit from Ireland's smallest bird, the Goldcrest, even smaller than the king of all birds the wren. For a splendid moment it rested amongst the cherry blossoms, perhaps on its way to one of the yew trees growing in Goldenbridge Cemetery.

Crab apple blossoms abound and fall in the Orchard as if we all were "Just Married" at this time.

I've been experimenting with planting Chamomile tea bags and have had some success so watch this space as I will be adding areas of chamomile lawn..

Whatever this season means for you I welcome you all to have a go at growing new things from the tea aisle and to always remember to come visit us and enjoy your garden.
