We're excited to be part of this year's Culture Date with Dublin 8 once again. On Saturday May 13, we have a full day of historical talks, workshops, walking tours and even a teddy bear's picnic planned for you. All we need now is to hope for good weather!
Over the course of the weekend the whole Dublin 8 area will come alive with over 50 specially curated events including talks, walks, markets, performances and tours! The Festival aims to celebrate Dublin 8’s rich cultural, historical and architectural heritage while encouraging people who are living, working and visiting the area to explore what is on their doorstep.
Our full line-up for the day includes:
11 am - Flipbook animation workshop for children aged 8 to 13
Join animator Joseph Orr to learn to create a flipbook animation. Flipbooks are ideal for young people interested in drawing and animation. Using 'my neighbourhood' as a theme to inspire your ideas, you will learn how to use the basic principles of hand drawn animation to make your own creations come to life.
The workshop is a mixture of live demonstrations, easy to follow drawing guides and practical hands-on creativity. All materials are provided and you get to take your flipbook home with you.

11 am - Richmond Barracks to Kilmainham Gaol Walking Tour
Walk in the footsteps of the 1916 leaders as they went to their deaths in Kilmainham Gaol following a cursory court-martial at Richmond Barracks. Along the way you will hear of local poets and poetry.
Learn about the police and military riot on Emmet Road during the 1913 lock-out and how six young lads from Inchicore fought for democracy in the Spanish Civil War. You will hear of the malevolent doings of the Sham Squire and how ‘Carey told on Skin the Goat’.
The tour concludes at Ronan Gillespie’s evocative sculpture commemorating those executed in Stonebreakers yard.

11 am - History talk with Donal Fallon : The Civil War and Dublin 8.
If the Decade of Centenaries began for many with commemoration of the Lockout in 2013, it has arrived at its conclusion with the anniversary of the end of the Civil War.
Donal Fallon's talk will take you through the history of some of the key Dublin 8 sites that were significant to the conflict including Richmond Barracks, Kilmainham Gaol and Goldenbridge Cemetery.

12.30 - 3 pm - Teddy bear's picnic and Picnic in the Garden
Join us for a picnic in Richmond Barracks garden. Bring your sambos and your picnic blanket and chill out in the beautiful surroundings of our garden space.
We'll be starting at 12.30 pm with a Teddy Bear's Picnic with Inchicore Library (make sure to bring your teddy!)
Then afterwards we will be relaxing, playing some games, having some music and serving tea, orange squash and buns. We look forward to seeing you!

1.30 pm - History talk with Ronan McGreevy: Michael Collins and the assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson MP
The assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson MP by two London-born members of the IRA was the catalyst for Ireland's Civil War. Who ordered the shooting and what role did Michael Collins have in it? Using never before released documentation from the military archives, Ronan McGreevy unravels one of the great mysteries of Irish history.
Ronan McGreevy is an Irish Times journalist and videographer. He is the author of a number of books, most recently the Assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson MP which was named by the Sunday Business Post as the history book of 2022. He was named a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French government in 2018 for his work on remembrance of the First World War.

2 pm - Biodiversity Tour from Richmond Barracks to Stillgarden Distillery
Join our resident eco-gardener Polly Rowley-Sams to explore the biodiversity of Inchicore.
Discover the ecology of the locality and the surprising flora and fauna found within it on this tour that takes you through St. Michael's Estate, along the canal and back towards Stillgarden Distillery. Visit some unexpected local treasures along the way. This tour has been developed in collaboration with local environmental groups and highlights the important role we can all play in supporting biodiversity locally.

3 pm - Children's History Workshop: Tell us more about Inchicore!
Is there a young person aged 9 - 12 in your life who loves Inchicore, its history, its places and stories? Then this interactive workshop is for them!
Join Dublin’s Historian-in-Residence for Children Dervilia Roche for this free, interactive workshop for children. They will trace the history of Inchicore and surrounding areas, and help Dervilia learn more about the area by telling everyone about their favourite Inchicore places, buildings or stories.

6 pm - Saints Alive! - St Patrick’s Athletic in the Brian Kerr Era, 1986-1996. An interview with Brian Kerr and Dermot Looney.
This event will see former Pat’s manager and Irish football legend Brian Kerr interviewed by St Pat’s historian Dermot Looney, author of the recently-published Saints Rising - The Early History of St Patrick's Athletic FC.
Brian will speak about his ten years in charge at the Saints, bringing a club who had fallen on hard times back to the top of Irish football to win two League of Ireland Premier Division titles. The event will explore the move away from Richmond Park, the struggles of getting back to Inchicore, adventures in Europe and further afield, and some of the characters on and off the pitch who made this a golden era for St Pat’s and football in Dublin 8.
The interview will be accompanied by videos and images from the era, and will feature a Q and A session for those in attendance. All welcome.
