Richmond Barracks Christmas Fair - Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December 2024 from 11 am to 5 pm

Enjoy a weekend filled with creativity, community and connection at our Christmas Fair.

Come together to meet artists, makers, producers and small businesses as we celebrate the winter season. Find unique and delicious gifts for you and yours.

Our fairs are family friendly, with entertainment and creative activities for all ages. There will be stalls, workshops, walking tours, entertainment, food and drink and more to enjoy.

With free admission, you can bring your family, friends, and curiosity for a day of exploration and discovery. Dogs are welcome too.

Our building is accessible, with safe parking for bikes and for buggies. We open at 11 am each day. Find directions here.

Creative Workshops


Try out free festive workshops for all ages, including seasonal crafts, dance, decorations make-and-do, singing and upcycling.

No need to book in advance. To take part in workshops you must book a place at the reception desk 30 minutes before the workshop takes place. Places may be limited.

 

Christmas storytime with Inchicore Library - Saturday at 11.15 am to 12 noon

Join Inchicore Library for a special Christmas storytime at the Fair. Teddy Bears are welcome to join in!

This is a drop-in event so places may be limited. Children should be accompanied by an adult.


Roth na Bliana workshop - Saturday at 12 noon to 1 pm

Join Dublin’s Historian in Residence for Children Dervilia Roche and Richmond Barracks Eco-Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams for this free, interactive workshop for children aged 9 to 12.

Explore the history of the winter solstice, learn about other dates in the old Irish calendar, and create a special version of a Christmas wreath that represents the cycle of the year.

This workshop is suitable for children aged 9 to 12. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Balkan Folk Dance workshop - Saturday at 12.15 pm to 1 pm

Join Slavi Begov of the folk dance group 'Bread and Salt' for a lively Balkan Folk Dance workshop. Slavi will guide you through some traditional chain dances from the region, giving a bit of background history of each dance. 

This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 13+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Make Christmas baubles from upcycled fabric. Saturday at 1.30 pm to 2.15 pm and 2.15 pm to 3 pm.

Add some Christmas cheer by helping to keep fabrics out of landfill! Join Oileán from Change Clothes to make your own Christmas baubles from upcycled scrap fabric.

This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 8+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Native Irish Trees - Saturday at 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm.

Explore and learn about the native trees of Ireland. Join Eco Gardener in Residence Polly Rowley-Sams to find out how to identify different native Irish species and discover the important role they play in supporting biodiversity.

This workshop will include a short walk to Grattan Crescent Park in Inchicore. This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 7+; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Make a Christmas Garland - Saturday at 3.30 pm to 4.15 pm and 4.15 pm to 5.00 pm

Bring your Christmas decorations to the next level! Join artist Paula Garcia Ibanez to make your own unique Christmas garland using craft materials with a touch of nature.

This workshop is suitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Festive dance workshop for ages 4 to 7. Sunday at 11.30 am to 12 noon

Join our Dance Artist in Residence Mia DiChiaro for a festive and fun dance adventure! We'll dance like reindeer, learn the hot chocolate dance, wrap up presents in Santa's workshop, and enjoy moving to our favourite Christmas tunes!

Grown ups should accompany children taking part and will be encouraged to participate at times.

This workshop is suitable for children aged 4 to 7. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Decorate a Christmas Cookie. Sunday at 11.30 am to 11.50 am and 12.10 pm to 12.30 pm

Join Chef Janice from FoodCloud to decorate your own Christmas Cookie!

 It might get a bit messy so less-loved clothes are recommended.

 This workshop is suitable for all ages, children must be accompanied by an adult.

Festive dance workshop for ages 8 to 12. Sunday at 12:30 pm to 1 pm

Join our Dance Artist in Residence Mia DiChiaro for an energetic festive dance party. We'll warmup, leap like reindeer, encounter a Christmas tree forest, and play games set to jolly Christmas songs. Grown ups will be encouraged to participate at times.

Print your own Christmas Cards and Wrapping Paper. Sunday at 1.30 pm to 2.15 pm and 2.15 pm to 3 pm

Join artist Shannon Jade Wilson for this introduction to printmaking using stencils, stamps and rollers.

In this workshop you will make your own design that you can print on wrapping paper and cards. You can take your stencils and stamps with you to make more at home!

This workshop is suitable for all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Embroidery Workshop - Sunday at 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm

Join Alice from Be Alice for an introduction to embroidery. Learn how to stitch and embroider beautiful designs, so you can make all your own Christmas presents this year!

All materials will be provided. At the end of the workshop you can bring your materials home to keep working on your new hobby!

Make a Holiday Elf - Sunday at 3.30 pm to 4.15 pm and 4.15 pm to 5 pm

Join artist and designer Liz Walsh for this fun and playful activity designing and decorating your own Little Holiday Elf.

 Using recycled card you will cut, paint and stick your little elf together. Your elf will have moving legs and arms and can be displayed over the festive season for years to come.

This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 7+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Make Geometric Christmas decorations - Sunday at 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm

Learn to make your own geometric Christmas decorations from upcycled packaging. Join artist and crafter Bindi Allen for this fun creative workshop.

This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 8+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guided walking tours

Join one of our guided walking tours. Choose from the area’s historical connections to 1916, or Goldenbridge, Ireland’s first garden cemetery.

Saturday, 30 November:

11 am to 12.15 pm - Richmond Barracks to Kilmainham

Walk in the footsteps of the 1916 leaders as they went to their deaths in Kilmainham Gaol following a cursory court-martial at Richmond Barracks. Along the way you will hear of local poets and poetry. 

Learn about the police and military riot on Emmet Road during the 1913 lock-out and how six young lads from Inchicore fought for democracy in the Spanish Civil War. You will hear of the malevolent doings of the Sham Squire and how ‘Carey told on Skin the Goat’.

1 pm to 2.15 pm - Goldenbridge Cemetery tour

Goldenbridge Cemetery is Ireland's first garden cemetery and was founded by ‘the Liberator’ Daniel O’Connell almost 200 years ago. 

Visitors will be guided through this unspoilt cemetery and learn about its unique history, including the vaults, the armed guards, the Cuban bloodhounds, the body snatchers and the people buried in the historically significant and interesting graves within its walls.

The Bubble Guys - Saturday at 1 pm, Sunday at 2 pm

What do children love more than bubbles? Hundreds and thousands of them! Entertainment specialists The Bubble Guys are joining us this weekend to make the place pop.

Sing for Fun performance - Saturday at 2 pm to 3 pm

Enjoy a performance of seasonal songs from participants of our weekly 'Sing for Fun' singing workshop, led by Richmond Barracks' artist in residence for singing Michael McCartan.

 Sing For Fun is for anyone who is interested in singing as part of a group. You don’t have to have singing experience or be able to read music to take part. All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to take part. Join in on Thursdays at 11am

St James's Brass and Reed Band - 3 pm to 4 pm Saturday and Sunday

We're delighted to welcome back a Festive fair favourite - the ladies and gentlemen of St James's Brass and Reed Band, the oldest band in Ireland and possibly Europe!

Expect Christmas favourites, pop versions and the odd classic overture or two. You are invited to sing and clap and dance along.

The Sing and Tonics - Saturday at 4 pm, Sunday at 2 pm

We welcome back the entertainers of Sing and Tonics to our Christmas Fair.

You can expect a pep in your step and a bounce in your legs as they entertain us with festive favourites, Christmas crooning and the odd surprise or three.

Balkan folk dancing - Sunday at 12.30 to 1.30 pm

Happy Out Coffee

We welcome back our superstars Alex and Vic, owners of Happy Out Coffee, to our garden.

They specialise in premium coffee and baked goods. They cater to diverse tastes and dietary needs, offering gluten-free and vegan options, as well as non-coffee drinks.

FoodCloud Kitchen

FoodCloud Kitchen, who are in our building every Friday, 10 am to 3 pm, will be serving delicious hot food and drinks with a generous side of social impact. 

All profits generated from FoodCloud Kitchen are reinvested into FoodCloud’s core activities, redistributing surplus food to over 600 community and voluntary organisations across the country. 

Their menu changes regularly and is created using seasonal ingredients sourced from FoodCloud's suppliers.
