Garden

Our garden - a communal green space for nature and humans to grow

Pop in any day to the garden at Richmond Barracks and you will be sure to see a hive of activity. Whether its Polly, our Eco-Gardener and Artist in Residence digging a bed, Joan the beekeeper looking after her bees, community groups that manage their own assigned community plot, or one of the many local people, groups, or schools that regularly come to the garden to muck in, learn something new, meet a friend, or just to take a moment to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells - the garden is a place for everyone.

In our garden we have introduced an eco-gardener, whose mission is sustainable gardening. We also host Joan, a beekeeper from the local area and her bee hives. We have assigned some community plots to local groups, which Polly supports with information, access and guidance. We are open for you to come and do gardening or to join us in workshops, community days or at summer camps.

The Garden is open for everyone to enjoy Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, so if you'd like to drop in we'd love to see you.

Watch our video above or read on to find out more about some of the people and activities that bring the garden to life every day.

Biodiversity in the garden

Polly Rowley-Sams

Polly has been our Eco-Gardener in Residence for two years. This means she looks for ways of gardening that help both nature and humans. Polly makes sure the soil is the best it can be, and that everything we plant brings not just colour and interest, but also involves and supports native species. She shares this knowledge with others through workshops, community gardening sessions and lots of lovely chats with curious visitors.

We are proud members of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and will be undertaking more initiatives to ensure biodiversity is central to garden activities including rainwater harvesting system, bees, planting strategies and more.

When you visit us we can give you our Biodiversity Self-Guided Worksheet for your kids to explore the garden with puzzles, maps and information about the garden and biodiversity. It is available to download here.

If you’d like to learn more about activities in the garden or find out you can get involved, contact us at info@richmondbarracks.ie
