Talks at the Mess: Dublin, A Writer’s City: Inchicore

Talks at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks, Inchicore that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present.

In this talk, Professor Chris Morash, author of Dublin: A Writer’s City invites us to explore the hidden literary history of Inchicore and surrounding areas.

The area around Inchicore has always held a special place in the imagination of Dublin’s writers.  For many years the western edge of the city has been a particularly rich source for poets such as Eavan Boland and Thomas Kinsella (who, of course, was born at 37 Phoenix Street, in nearby Kilmainham).  If we extend the area around Inchicore to nearby Chapelizod, a whole new world of imagination opens up, including the most important Irish supernatural novelist of the nineteenth century, Joseph Sheridan LeFanu, and, of course, James Joyce. 

Chris Morash is the Séamus Heaney Professor of Irish Writing in Trinity College Dublin, where he also served as Vice-Provost from 2016-19. He has published extensively on Irish culture, and in literary studies more widely.

His book, Dublin: A Writer’s City is part of the Imagining Cities series, for which he is series editor.  He has also been commissioned to edit The Cambridge History of the Irish Novel.  Since 2019 he has chaired the judging panel for the International Dublin Literary Award, the world’s richest prize for a single work in English.
